NextPlay Presents: Black History Month Jam Session

Let us take you back to the glory days — to simpler times, when you used pogs to barter and drove karts instead of cars. Come dressed in your favorite 90’s clothing for this special Black history month Jam Session!

The purpose of this event is to connect with diverse people managers in the tech industry. We recognize that mentorship can be very impactful in helping you grow; so we're being intentional about helping you connect with industry leaders who will share wisdom that could help you advance in your career. Look out for people managers in white NextPlay t-shirts and approach them as they're there to help.

As usual, you'll be able to mix and mingle with 100+ Black & Latino software engineers/product managers, listen to lightning talks from Optimizely and Mapbox and vibe to your favorite 90's tunes from our DJ, amazing house band and talented singers, dancers etc.

Looking forward to an electric BHM celebration!

Challenge

Demographics are changing rapidly and the tech industry's workforce still has a big opportunity to reflect the diversity of it's customers/users. 5 U.S states or equivalent are majority minority. 91% of total U.S population growth in 2017 is multicultural, Hispanics alone accounting for 51% of the growth. Minorities are growing in population but the tech industry is having challenges finding diverse talent and creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

Solution

NEXTPLAY has created a unique approach to building community and connecting professionals of color to opportunities in tech. We host innovative events that combine professional networking, lightning talks and live entertainment--singing, dancing, spoken word, stand up comedy etc. We incorporate the arts in our events to create a more casual environment so attendees can be their authentic self, build relationships and potentially secure their next play.

Design Partner, Sparkwave Media

Agenda

9:00am

Understand

Lightning Talks on Business Goals

Attend small group workshops about mobile ads, mobile responsive site and mobile app development. Learn about the rapid rise of mobile browsing (and what that means to us) in our interactive globe installation. And hear from Faizaam Ghauri , Founder of The Minimal NYC, about how to get caught up -- and then get ahead.

10:25am

Define

Jessica Annas Defines the User Journey

We’re capturing more data than ever before. And we’re doing it more precisely. But we’re still not using data to its full potential. Used well, numbers can teach us about each other, inspire our creativity and help us take risks and innovate in our work.

12:00pm

Diverge

Ashton Ajayi Discusses Diverge Methods

Ashton Ajayi of Pixel Palace will explain how marketers can use our insights and knowledge about the customer to influence and improve the bigger business strategy.

1:15pm

Decide

Chris Logan Reviews Decide Methods

Everyone’s focusing on it, but it’s not a focused word. What does it mean exactly? Why does it matter? And how do we do it right? Attend small group workshops about mobile ads, mobile responsive site and mobile app development.

“Design is not making beauty, beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love.”

Louis Kahn

The Minimal NYC

Architect
